Global Schools for a Global Future

The aims of the Global Schools Project are to develop greater awareness and understanding of international development amongst young people and to demonstrate its relevance to their own lives through repeated exposure to the issues, through meaningful experiences in different subject areas, during their time at school.

The project will achieve this by identifying opportunities within a range of subjects in the curriculum to incorporate a Global Dimension. It will provide teachers with appropriate resources to fit within their Schemes of Work. The Global Dimension to the curriculum will include the themes:

International Development

Global Interdependence

Poverty Reduction.

The project will train the school Global Dimension co-ordinators in Development Education issues and methodology. This will enable them to help each participating department in their school to conduct an audit of the current coverage of global issues and identify new opportunities from within the National Curriculum.

The team will identify resources and strategies that could be used to fulfil new opportunities. Teachers in each department will build these new opportunities into their Schemes of Work. The teachers will trial the suggested activities and, where appropriate, redesign or design new lesson plans.

Currently, there are five schools in West Yorkshire who are involved with the project. Its success relies on the continued support of the Headteachers and Senior Managers at the schools, as well as the commitment of the Co-ordinators. It is envisaged that the project will span a two year period, with a third year being given to the development of resources, which will be published and made available for purchase from Leeds DEC.

Activities will be trialled in different subject areas as they are written into the Schemes of Work. Evaluation of the project will be an on-going process involving the schools themselves, including the pupils and the work of the DEC.
