Section 1 - The project

1.1 Aims and objectives of the project
The project identified a number of specific aims and objectives.

Primary aim:
To make young people aware of their rights and responsibilities as European citizens and issues of justice and equality with respect to Europe and the wider world

Other Aims:
a) To raise awareness of the European Union and its multiculturalism
b) To increase the level of debate on EU Citizenship and European governance
c) To stimulate intercultural dialogue amongst young people

a. To raise awareness of the European Union and its multiculturalism

Issues highlighted:
• Knowledge of other member states
• Human Rights issues
• Historical links ( colonial)
• Language
• Disparities in wealth
• Racism
• Refugees- identity , belonging, becoming a citizen
• Migration
• Culture- is there a European culture
• Trade and debt
• Aid
• Protectionism
• Religion
• Diversity
• Conflicts and conflict resolution

b. To increase the level of debate on EU Citizenship and European governance

Issues highlighted:
• Media literacy work
• Refugee/asylum seekers debate
• Awareness of rights and responsibilities as European Citizens and issues of justice
• We have rights as citizens of Europe, but what about those outside? What about the new accession countries?
• Trade issues/ barriers/ tariffs

c. To stimulate intercultural dialogue amongst young people
Issues highlighted:

• Social status amongst those in dialogue, raises issues of class, gender, ethnicity
• Personal identity, community and wider, what does it mean to be a European citizen, responsibilities as well as rights
• Is there equality between the new states and older states re. rights and responsibilities
• Issues of justice and equality Europe and the wider world
• Culture- can reflect stereotypes, prejudice, misinformation
• Dialogue- within school community- within UK, within wider world, across Europe
• Links with migration, trade, social cohesion
• Religious identity
• Language, politics, personal and collective history
