Teaching about European Citizenship in a Multicultural
Union - A practical resources guide for schools
This document is a short guide for schools on the
opportunities for incorporating an ‘intercultural
dimension’ into the citizenship curriculum.
It contains background information on European Citizenship,
information about training and resources to support
the delivery of the issues in the classroom.
During the course of 2004-5 Leeds DEC ran a project
titled: European Citizenship in a Multicultural Union.
This project explored the following themes:
• The value of active participation in society
on local, national, European and global levels
• The nature and significance of European citizenship
including the relationship between the UK and European
political and economic structures and global institutions
• How the European Union is related to global
society through its diverse cultural communities,
building an intercultural understanding and promoting
social cohesion
• The value of European citizenship in providing
social justice and economic and political stability
• The contribution of the European Union to
global stability and the future challenges it faces
to ensure a prosperous and sustainable future for
all
