European Citizenship in a
Multicultural Union


Overview of the project
The Project ‘EU Citizenship in a multicultural Union’ was a year -long project funded by the European Union. During the project Education Leeds, International Leeds and Leeds Development Education Centre worked on a programme of activity focused on educating young people in Leeds about what it means to be a European citizen in today’s diverse society.

Project goal:
To make young people aware of their rights and responsibilities as European citizens and issues of justice and equality with respect to Europe and the wider world.

Through a series of events and training seminars, the project bought together NGOs, statutory sector & education institutions in a programme designed to provide teachers with the skills and resources they need to teach young people about the importance of citizenship in an ethnically diverse Europe.

A total of 44 schools received training through this programme.

The project also created of a network of civil society organisations has developed new trans-national partnerships.

 


The project delivered these aims through the organisation of :

  • A Civil Society Forum, attended by Secretary of State for International Development, Hilary Benn
  • A follow-up ‘EU Citizenship’ seminar for NGOs
  • A Showcase event for teachers & schools on ’EU Citizenship in a multicultural union’
  • A conference & debate for schools on ’EU Citizenship in a multicultural union’ at Leeds Civic Hall

And through:

  • A programme of city-wide training sessions to schools
  • A programme of Inservice Training and resources in 29 schools
  • Work with schools to provide 5 community –awareness raising events
  • The production and distribution a guidance document on the themes to the schools involved
