Earth Summit Project

From Earth Summit to School Action The Earth Summit Project is working with Key Stage 2 in nine primary schools in the Leeds area.

It was inspired by the Second World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa, in September 2002, where world leaders got together to talk about the pressing issues for people and planet at the beginning of the Third Millennium (arguably, they didn't get much done). So, the primary school children of Leeds, through the project, are going to see if they can do any better!

Approximately 300 children in classes from the nine schools attended an Earth Summit to launch the project in Leeds Civic Hall on March 12th 2003.

Children had chosen particular issues to focus on from the range discussed in Johannesburg and gave presentations to share what they've found out with others.

The three issues were:

  • Food and Trade
  • Energy use and climate change
  • Water and Sanitation

The children in the nine participating primary schools are now engaged in looking at how to make their schools and communities more sustainable places in which to live and learn.
